Hello project
Platforms
Internet archive
The Bando Media Project is being created with the final intention of uploading the digital recordings, images, and metadata-enriched descriptions of the reel-to-reel tapes to the Internet archive so that the voices on these tape might be included the historical record. Internet archive support Dublin core. Import/export in json.
Collective Access
Looked promising, I liked the various metacata-schema installation profiles, and the expressed capabilities of importing and exporting structured data into json and csv, liked the design. Setup of custom interfaces was too complicated for such a small project, diff to discern how and where things were stored. It has unusual content management database design. If used in institutional context these issues would be compensated for but for this project they were not my thing. I tried Collective Access bc it was a recommended open source collection management package that primed to work with pbcore.
WordPress/Pods supplemented with ACF –
Was dubious of Pods plugin bc usuall third party-ish all-in-one plugins are fussy, but ..Pods is great. Adding functionality of ACF provides easy construction of complex custom metadata fields. Posts and pages are easy to find. Traditional CMS database design. Simple-ish. Mostly free but have to pay for acf pro. Page design is over-complicated but not impossible (Gutenberg). Integration potential with plugins for information analysis and display (timeline, leaflet, etc). Can’t export into json w/o paid plugin, but I can export in cvs and convert to json locally.
Drupal
Was trying to avoid Drupal bc everyone always yelled at me about it but my God 11 is so good! Was running into so many issues w/ Wordpress, esp the cost for the plugins that I'd absolutely need. The search for themes and plugins is stupid and it's more of a pay to play scam than a usable CMS. It's gone downhill so drastically. As usual for apps/software/platforms that forget their purpose is information not marketing.
Schema
Dublin core 2018
Internet archive supports Dublin core with the ability to add custom fields. But Dublin core lacks fields for some information specific to audio. Add custom fields to IA when uploading.
PBCore
Since this is a small audio/multimedia archive I’m including some custom fields from pbcore. pbcore issues for me – fully comprehending the pbcore ontology – the differences and relationships bw object, object representation, instantiation, essencetrack. I keep defaulting to FRBR ontology and can’t quite fit the two together in my mind. tbc
EBUCore
Loved this one, integrated elements.
